An Update from the LSBA President Regarding Hurricane Ida
Dear Members:
I hope that the majority of you impacted by Hurricane Ida have been able to return to your homes and that you are continuing to recover from this devastating storm. The Bar Center is scheduled to reopen at 8:30 a.m., Monday, September 13 with limited staff, as some of our staff members are still displaced due to continuing power outages and/or damage which prevents them from returning to their homes. However, our website remains fully functional and we urge you to visit it for latest updates from the LSBA and the Louisiana Supreme Court.
Louisiana Supreme Court Issues Order Extending Filing Deadlines; Other LASC Orders Online
Due to the ongoing interruption from Hurricane Ida and Tropical Storm Nicholas, the Louisiana Supreme Court issued an Order on Sept. 17 extending filing deadlines. Review the 9-17-21 Court Order. The Court will be closed through Sept. 19. Cases scheduled to be heard on the Court’s September docket have been postponed until the week of Oct. 18. The Court has issued an order extending prescription, peremption and abandonment. The Court has also issued an emergency suspension of time limitations in criminal matters. In addition, Courts throughout the state will be issuing their own orders regarding closures, etc. All of this information will be posted on the Louisiana Supreme Court’s website.
Online Supply Donations Sought for Hurricane Ida Relief
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, an effort to get much needed supplies to Houma is being organized by Trial Lawyers Care (spearheaded by New Orleans City Councilmember Joseph Giarrusso, State Representative Walt Leger, H. Minor Pipes and Jennifer Greene).
LSBA YLD Creates Disaster Tips Worksheet
The LSBA YLD, in conjunction with the American Bar Association created a worksheet with tips and resources for dealing with a disaster. The worksheet includes post-disaster tips for recovery, tips for filing insurance or FEMA claims, and information on legal aid, fraud, and important contact information. 21 Parishes Need Attorney Volunteers for “Lawyers in Libraries” Week
The LSBA is gearing up for its 2021 “Lawyers in Libraries” Week of Service from Oct. 25-30. Currently, 21 Louisiana parishes need attorney volunteers to provide legal assistance at public libraries.
Sonnier, Centola, Amond Nominated for LSBA, YLD Leadership Positions
Shayna L. Sonnier of Lake Charles and Lawrence J. Centola III of New Orleans have been nominated for 2022-23 LSBA president-elect and 2022-24 LSBA treasurer, respectively. The Young Lawyers Division Council nominated Kristen D. Amond of New Orleans for 2022-23 YLD secretary.
LBLS Accepting Bankruptcy Law Certification Applications Through Sept. 30
The Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization is accepting applications for business bankruptcy law and consumer bankruptcy law certification from now through Sept. 30, 2021.
Deadline is Oct. 18 for 2022 Expert Witness, Consultant & Legal Services Directory
