We all know that some foods are bad for us and we choose to eat them anyway because – quite simply – they taste very good.
But if you were told exactly how much you can reduce your life expectancy before each meal, would you still do it? Would you trade a hot dog for 36 minutes of your life, for example? Well, according to experts, this is exactly what you are doing, as a study by the University of Michigan says that hot dogs can take you more than half an hour of healthy living.
During a study, experts evaluated 5,853 foods to determine the minutes of life gained or lost when eaten, as well as their impact on the environment, writes Mirrror.
It was found that some foods can take up to 74 minutes of healthy living, and others can add up to 80 minutes.
Not surprisingly, processed meats and sugary drinks were found to do us no favors, they just take a few minutes out of our lives, but choices such as nuts, fruits and fish can add more minutes.
Findings from the study say: “Our analysis also showed that replacing just 10 percent of your daily calorie intake with processed beef and meat with selected fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes and seafood could provide significant health improvements of 48 minutes earned per person per day and a 33 percent reduction in dietary carbon footprint.
If you want your diet to help you live as long as possible, the researchers suggested that you reduce your intake of foods such as processed meats, beef, shrimp, pork, lamb and greenhouse vegetables.
